A salon geofence message should feel like a real-time nudge, not a broadcast

A good salon geofence message references the client's actual proximity — "passing by" or "nearby right now" — and offers something immediately useful, like a same-day slot, rather than a generic reminder that could have been sent any day.

Waya's geofence trigger puts the message on a client's lock screen when her phone is physically near your branch: Apple Wallet only, up to 10 branch locations per card, radius 50–500 meters (150 m is the default), set from the Branches screen rather than the card's address text. It costs zero message quota because it isn't a wallet-message send.

The three examples below are built for that moment — a client already near the salon, not one you're trying to pull in from across the city.

Three ready-to-send geofence messages

Keep geofence copy shorter and more immediate than a campaign message — the client is already close by, so the message just needs to convert proximity into a walk-in.

All three examples below stay well under 100 characters, which matters even more here since the message is competing with a busy lock screen while the client is out and about.

Trigger it automatically once, not per client

Geofence isn't something you send manually per client — you write the message once, set the radius on the Branches screen, and it fires automatically to any client with the card in Apple Wallet whenever her phone enters that radius.

This is different from every other message type covered elsewhere in this guide: it requires no ongoing action after setup, no campaign scheduling, and no message quota deduction.

  1. Open the Branches screen, not the card's address field

Geofence is configured per branch location here — the card's address text does not create it.

  2. Set a radius between 50 and 500 meters

150 meters is the default; a mall location may want a tighter radius than a standalone storefront.

  3. Write one geofence message per branch

Keep it under 100 characters and tied to something immediate, like a same-day slot.

  4. Confirm you're on Growth or above

The geofence settings screen requires Growth or above; Free doesn't include it.

  5. Remember it's Apple Wallet only

Google Wallet decides its own proximity trigger, so don't promise identical behavior to Android clients.

Character-length guidance for a geofence message

Geofence messages compete for attention on a lock screen while the client is walking or driving, so they need to be even more scannable than a scheduled campaign. Under 100 characters is the working target — long enough to say something specific, short enough to register in a glance.

Avoid anything that requires the client to stop and think — "passing by" plus one concrete offer is the whole formula.

  • Reference proximity directly — "near," "passing by," "around the corner"
  • Pair it with something available right now, like a same-day slot
  • Keep it under 100 characters; the client is likely reading it on the move
  • Set the radius from the Branches screen, never from the card's address text

Where geofence fits especially well for a salon

A salon in or near a mall gets the most out of geofence, since customers there are already walking distances measured in tens of meters all day — proximity is a frequent, real event rather than a coincidence. A standalone neighborhood salon still benefits, but the radius should probably sit closer to the 150–500 m range to catch clients driving past rather than only those on foot.

Either way, geofence complements the 14-day win-back trigger rather than replacing it — win-back reaches inactive clients regardless of location, while geofence reaches active clients at the one moment they're closest to walking in.

Waya's plan and platform limits, stated once

Geofence sits behind Growth and above — Free doesn't include the geofence settings screen — and it's the one notification type in this guide that isn't limited by the message balance at all.

Beyond that: Waya has no POS or till integration, no SMS channel, and the Android merchant app remains in closed testing, so all of this configuration happens through the web dashboard or the Waya iOS app. For the mechanics of how geofence compares to other proximity features, see location-based wallet notifications and the salon loyalty guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should a salon's geofence message say?

Something that reads as an immediate, proximity-specific nudge — "you're near us, here's a same-day slot" — rather than a generic reminder that could apply on any day.

Does geofence work on Google Wallet for a salon?

No, Waya's geofence trigger is Apple Wallet only. Google Wallet decides its own proximity behavior, so the same guarantee doesn't extend to Android clients.

How is the geofence radius set?

From the Branches screen in the dashboard, not from the card's address text — a common mix-up. The radius runs from 50 to 500 meters, with 150 meters as the default.

Does a geofence message use up the monthly message balance?

No. Geofence costs zero message quota because it isn't counted as a wallet-message send, unlike welcome, win-back, stamp, reward, and campaign messages.

Is geofence available on the Free plan?

No. The geofence settings screen requires Growth or above; the Free plan doesn't include it.
